Travel budget: what a trip costs, and how to pay once you are there

Most budgets stop at a daily figure. These pages go on to the part that costs money on the ground: which ATM, which button, how much cash, and whether to tip.

How the figures are made

  • Every price has a source and a date. A fare from the operator, a tax from the city, a bowl of noodles from the statistics office. When a price gets old it leaves the sum, and when a city runs out of prices its page comes down.
  • A range, not a number. Each line has a low and a high, and they are not all added at their extremes: nobody has a trip where everything comes out cheap.
  • Accommodation is yours to enter where we have no sample of hotel prices. We would rather ask than print a figure that looks right.

Countries and cities

Each country page explains how paying works there. Each city page works out your trip.

A city appears here when its prices have been checked against a source, not before.
